A priest was on television talking about Pope Francis’ universal appeal. He is beloved by Catholics, non-Catholics, non-religious, etc. because his message of social and economic justice. Peace, love, mercy, forgiveness, helping the poor, and non-judgement of others is what he encourages. The priest said this has caused many lapsed Catholics to want to check out the church again.
Unfortunately when they go, they hear the same old, same old about the church’s stand against contraception, against married priest, against women priest, against reproductive choice, and against marriage equality. The priest said these people walk out and never come back. He said that the Pope’s message of love and compassion has to filter down to the local level.
That priest hit the nail on the head. I love Pope Francis and his message, but will stay lapsed.
